Chatham County is initiating a drainage study update for the Red Gate area to better understand current drainage conditions and evaluate potential improvements to the stormwater system. This study is funded through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Sea Level Rise Impact Study Implementation Program and the Chatham County SPLOST. The project will examine how sea level rise and changing weather patterns may affect drainage infrastructure and flooding in the Red Gate area.

The Red Gate basin spans approximately 2,127 acres across two jurisdictions: unincorporated Chatham County and the City of Savannah. The basin is bounded by Ogeechee Road (Highway 17) to the north and the CSX railroad to the south. The Red Gate Canal flows southeast for approximately 6.6 miles, beginning near Red Gate Farm in the central portion of the basin and terminating at the Springfield Canal south of the railroad. The goal of the study is to identify future drainage challenges under full build-out conditions, evaluate potential flood risks, and develop recommendations to improve resilience and reduce flooding impacts for the surrounding community.

Additional information about the study, including the schedule and opportunities for public engagement during the later improvement stage, can be obtained by calling 912-652-7827.

Chatham County appreciates the community’s interest and cooperation as we work to better understand and improve drainage conditions in the Red Gate area.
